POLITICO: How the Gang of 8 is taking the fight to Donald Trump source Politico article Bloomberg: The Gang of Eight is calling on Donald Trump to close the net on them and their allies by using his power to defund them and block their bills, Bloomberg Businessweek reported Thursday.
The bipartisan bloc of Republicans and Democrats, led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is poised to block the legislation, dubbed the Fix the Debt Act, on Thursday.
But some in the caucus, including Vice President Mike Pence, have said they are willing to consider other ways to slow Trump’s agenda.
The Fix the Cost Act, which would create a cap on the amount of government spending that can be imposed on a state or local government to prevent the erosion of public services, is expected to pass in the Senate next week, Bloomberg reported.
“We have a real chance to win,” Pence said at a press conference Thursday, according to Bloomberg.
“We’ve got the votes, we have the leverage, we’ve got leverage to get this done.”
Democrats are likely to oppose the legislation in the House, where many members are skeptical of its chances of passing.
The Fix the Senate bill, on the other hand, has the support of more than 200 House Democrats, according the Congressional Research Service.
“I would be happy to do anything to get that done,” said Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., the top Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, Bloomberg added.
“But if you’re not willing to fight to fix our country’s problems, you’re going to be fighting to keep our nation’s debt artificially inflated.”
